We love being proved wrong over at Tidal Wave. When we mooched along to Sneaky Pete’s to catch the live part of Edinburgh’s Wide Days music seminar, PAWS left us feeling a bit ‘meh’.
Who knows if it was the slight iffy sound or a contrary need to disagree with our fellow bloggers who were practically foaming at the mouth over their performance. But it was a short-lived opinion, binned when we heard some session tracks, with the bin blown to smithereens when we saw them for a second time in the considerably larger T Break tent at this year’s T in the Park.
It’s a quite a racket they make too. Coming on like Dinosaur Jr meets Fugazi with the melody and guitar bunch of both, they seem to be generating quite a buzz across Scotland just now.
An now they’ve teamed up with those musical scholars, Gerry Loves Records to release a split EP with equally up-and-coming math rock titans Lady North.
Naturally, it was time for us to catch a word with these young chaps, in particular, singer and guitar mangle Phillip.
1. So who the hell are you?
PAWS. Phillipe, Matthew et Joshwa.
2. Describe your sound in ten words or less!
3. T in the Park!!!!! How did you think that went?
Pretty well we thinks. Was sunny outside and people came into a warm tent on their own will. So I guess that’s good? Also, I met Jenny Lewis.
4. Jealous!! You got a surprise – but surely not unwelcome – mention in NME as part of their preview. A weird feeling? Think it had any bearing on your audience?
Yeah I suppose it did feel weird. Nice to know that there’s some folk down South who like us too. We’re stoked that anybody wants to write about us, so it’s nice to be included in things like that as we would never expect that sort of attention. We’ve never thought about it. We just play. I’m not sure if it had any bearing. I guess time will tell.
5. How did you end up with working with those oddballs at Gerry Loves?
We just phoned them up and said “Ok boys, we don’t wanna dick around, we wanna be stars. We know you know how to do that. What say we meet and discuss a proposal over some pheasant and fine wine?” I need not say anything else.
6. Know much about your EP ‘mates’ Lady North?
One of our favourite bands. So unbelievably talented. Dashing young fellows too.
7. And a wee mini-tour to promote the record – excited?
I can’t sleep at night. I’ve been sitting, ready and waiting to go. It’s going to be great to hit some other towns with them. I know it’s going to be so much fun and I think the shows are all going to be insane. Really stoked about it.
8. Finally, can we expect a full length record soon?
Oui. Stay tuned with us on that one. Things to follow later this year…
PAWS will bw undertaking a short tour with Lady North to promote the EP, calling at the following spots:
July 28, Aberdeen Snafu (Dirty Hearts Club with additional support from Devils Disco)
August 1, Edinburgh Sneaky Pete’s (additional support from Vasquez)
August 3, Glasgow Captain’s Rest (additional support from Hairy AREA)
Head over to the Gerry Loves website for more info.
And that’s not all. PAWS are part of the bill for Ayetunes Vs Peenko 4, along with Adam Stafford, Miaoux Miaoux and Mondegreen at Glasgow’s Stereo on August 20. Tickets here. I hear it’s polite to pre-book tickets to avoid blogger/promoter insanity, cough, cough.
Have a gander at one of PAWS’ tracks (yes, it’s on the EP) below. If the Soundcloud box isn’t showing up properly (it isn’t on our laptop), try just heading here.
